The Amtrak Northeast Regional café menu is being updated for passengers between Boston and Virginia. The refresh adds a broader mix of snacks, drinks and meal choices. It is already in effect. New items include Nerds Gummy Clusters, along with other snack and beverage additions. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The change is part of Amtrak’s effort to modernize its brand and onboard experience. Also, it comes alongside other service news. That includes the Berkshire Flyer. It returns for summer 2026 from June 12, according to Amtrak. The route will operate in both directions. Passengers will have twice as many trip options this summer.

For passengers, the practical change is in the onboard café selection. At the same time, familiar customer favorites remain. New choices are being added across snacks, beverages, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Amtrak said the revised café offer is intended to give riders more variety. In addition, Amtrak said the updates reflect changing customer tastes.

Amtrak Northeast Regional café menu adds snack choices

On May 13, Amtrak introduced the revised food selection for Northeast Regional café service. The change covers travel between Boston and Virginia, as also covered by Railway Supply. The company framed the changes as part of an effort to refresh the passenger experience. It also described them as a way to broaden the range of onboard options.

Amtrak wrote on its website, “At Amtrak, great journeys are best paired with great food. That’s why we’re rolling out a refreshed Northeast Regional (NER) cafe menu on Wednesday, May 13, designed to bring more variety, flavor, and delicious options to our customers onboard. Serving more than 12 million riders each year between Boston and Virginia, these NER cafe updates are all about keeping the onboard dining experience fresh, modern, and aligned with evolving tastes.”

Among the newly announced items, Nerds Gummy Clusters are listed as a new option. In addition, the refresh includes Poppi Prebiotic Soda in Strawberry Lemon. Other listed items are Barebells Protein Bar, La Colombe Vanilla Draft Latte and Butter Cake.

  • Nerds Gummy Clusters
  • Barebells Protein Bar
  • La Colombe Vanilla Draft Latte
  • Butter Cake

Butter Cake is another notable addition. It is already a fan favorite on Amtrak’s long-distance services. In addition, it now adds a familiar option to the Northeast Regional.

Amtrak said the menu refresh is only the start of its ongoing work. That work aims to improve the onboard experience for guests.

“These updates are just the beginning of our ongoing commitment to enhancing the onboard experience for every guest. Whether you’re traveling for work, leisure, or connecting across the Northeast, we invite you to try our refreshed menu onboard!”

Breakfast, lunch and dinner options also change

Beyond snacks and drinks, the Northeast Regional menu has also been adjusted for meals throughout the day. Morning passengers will now see a warm sticky bun in the breakfast selection. Also, flavored syrups are available for coffee.

Amtrak wrote, “As the most important meal of the day, breakfast is getting a delicious refresh. Morning riders will notice something new with the addition of a warm sticky bun alongside flavored syrups for coffee, giving customers the chance to customize their drinks.”

Separately, lunch and dinner are also getting new sandwich and wrap choices. The added options include Chicken Salad on Pretzel Sliders, Buffalo Chicken Wrap and Curried Chickpea Wrap.

The new lunch and dinner items give passengers more choice. At the same time, most popular existing items remain on the Northeast Regional menu.

Popular favorites remain on the Northeast Regional menu

Still, Amtrak is keeping its top-selling Turkey Havarti sandwich on the Northeast Regional café menu. Instead, the sandwich will remain available alongside the new Chicken Salad on Pretzel Sliders. The Buffalo Chicken Wrap and Curried Chickpea Wrap are also joining it.

For example, riders have identified the Turkey Havarti sandwich as a favorite. They also mentioned mac and cheese.

One traveler wrote when asked about the top Northeast Regional Café foods, “I enjoyed the turkey and cheese sandwich and the Mac and cheese the most.”

Another person wrote, “Mac & cheese is pretty spectacular, but I can’t imagine the calorie count.”

For passengers looking for different types of options, the refreshed menu includes the Curried Chickpea Wrap as a vegetarian choice. Meanwhile, Barebells protein bars add a higher-protein snack option.

Overall, the Northeast Regional café update expands the onboard selection without removing the main customer favorites. In addition, options now range from new candy and refreshed drinks to coffee add-ons. Warm breakfast items and additional lunch and dinner selections are also part of the update.
