USA: Amtrak Midwest cancellations from Chicago are scheduled to continue through Aug. 21 on five corridors, following an earlier wave of service cuts linked to a shortage of serviceable locomotives.

Five Chicago corridors have cancellations scheduled

An internal advisory reported by Trains lists selected cancellations on routes from Chicago to St. Louis, Quincy, Pontiac, Grand Rapids and Carbondale. The latest dates extend the disruption schedule to Aug. 21.

On the Chicago–Quincy corridor, trains 381 and 382 are listed for cancellation on Aug. 10, 14, 17 and 21. Chicago–Pontiac trains 350 and 355 are affected on Aug. 11, 15 and 18.

For Chicago–Grand Rapids, train 371 is listed on Aug. 10, 14, 17 and 21 after an Aug. 8 cancellation, while train 370 is listed on Aug. 13, 16 and 20 after an Aug. 9 cancellation. Chicago–Carbondale trains 391 and 392 are listed for Aug. 12 and 19. The advisory also listed Chicago–St. Louis train 305 for Aug. 8 and train 300 for Aug. 9.

The cancellations follow service cuts that began Aug. 4 on three routes because of a lack of serviceable locomotives. The canonical source does not establish that every later cancellation through Aug. 21 has been formally attributed by Amtrak to the same cause.

What passengers can do during disruption?

The supplied source says already-booked passengers appear to be accommodated on chartered buses. Amtrak’s Customer Service Commitments provide broader guidance for disruptions: the operator says it will make reasonable efforts to rebook passengers on the next available service and, during significant disruptions when possible, arrange alternate transportation that can include scheduled or chartered buses, cars or air travel.

Amtrak’s service-disruption terms also provide rebooking and refund options for affected travel. Because arrangements can vary by train and reservation, travelers on the listed dates should confirm the status of their specific departure and any replacement transportation before going to the station.
