The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has already furloughed some 23% of its employees. This means that inspections, investigation, as well as the enforcement of rules, are all suspended. It could slow down maintenance projects on strategic routes.

This announcement not only highlights the looming problem of how Amtrak’s network could face congestion just as millions of Americans prepare for Thanksgiving or Christmas travel.
