USA: Amtrak has extended the Seattle–Portland rail suspension through Aug. 14 as collapse concerns at Portland’s fire-damaged Centennial Mills warehouse continue to restrict passenger service, with buses covering most scheduled trains.

Amtrak’s Aug. 10 advisory says rail service between Seattle and Portland is suspended through Friday, with alternate buses provided for most scheduled trains and some departures canceled because bus availability is limited. Affected customers can rebook or request a full refund at no additional cost.

The Amtrak Cascades service page lists 12 daily trains between Seattle and Portland, equal to six round trips. The current restriction applies specifically to that corridor: the City of Portland says trains between Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia, and between Portland and Eugene are operating normally.

Collapse Risk Keeps Portland Rail Access Restricted

The disruption follows the Aug. 2 fire at Centennial Mills, an eight-story disused warehouse just north of Portland Union Station. All eight floors collapsed in the fire, and the City says leaning walls, the unstable rooftop water-tower structure and fire damage leave the building at risk of further collapse.

Portland’s emergency update says passenger and freight rail operations were suspended after engineers warned that vibrations from trains passing through the collapse zone could destabilize the damaged warehouse. The update says Portland–Seattle Amtrak service remains temporarily restricted and that Amtrak is providing bus transportation between the two cities.

Centennial Mills Demolition Must Begin by Aug. 14

The Aug. 14 date also appears in Portland’s dangerous-structure order for Centennial Mills. The property owner is required to begin removing the rooftop water tank and demolishing the mill as soon as possible and no later than Friday, Aug. 14.

Aug. 14 should not be read as a confirmed reopening date: Amtrak says its advisory is subject to change as conditions warrant and directs passengers to check current train status before travel.
