Voestalpine railway orders for DB and SBB projects
25.03.2026
The new voestalpine railway orders total EUR 500 million. They cover rails, switches, signaling technology and monitoring applications. They are for national railway operators in Germany and Switzerland.

Also, these agreements cover projects carried out by Deutsche Bahn (DB). In addition, they cover projects carried out by Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). Meanwhile, they reinforce the Austrian group’s standing in the railway infrastructure sector. For example, earlier work included the new Koralmbahn line in Austria. Also, it included Egypt’s first high-speed railway line.

“We are pleased that these orders continue our long-standing partnership with DB and SBB and that we can contribute to the modernization and digitalization of Europe’s railway infrastructure with our products and systems,” said Herbert Eibensteiner, CEO of voestalpine AG.

For the German market, voestalpine Railway Systems will supply premium rails and switch components. For example, this includes Frankfurt Central Station modernization. It also includes upgrades to high-capacity corridors, including the Hamburg–Berlin route.
In addition, its German role includes support, training and maintenance services. It also handles logistics for long welded rails and pre-assembled switch systems. These systems go straight to construction sites.
Separately, the company was recently involved in Riedbahn route modernization. Also, the route runs between Frankfurt and Mannheim. Still, it is one of Europe’s busiest rail lines. At the same time, voestalpine said most switches installed there used its technology.
Axle counting systems and digital services for SBB
Meanwhile, in Switzerland, voestalpine signed a Swiss Federal Railways framework agreement with SBB. Also, this deal can run for up to 20 years. At the same time, it supports the digitalization of the rail network.
In addition, the company will supply modern axle counting systems. These systems detect whether a track section is clear or occupied. Still, they help improve safety across the network.
Separately, the scope also covers diagnostic systems and cybersecurity solutions. This further expands voestalpine’s position in standardized EULYNX signaling technologies.
“Digital signaling, monitoring, and diagnostic systems are crucial for the performance and safety of critical railway infrastructure,” said Franz Kainersdorfer, a member of the management team of the railway systems division at voestalpine.
