Alstom Coradia Max trains Baden-Württemberg: 26 more ordered

Alstom Coradia Max trains Baden-Württemberg are set to expand once more after the manufacturer agreed to supply 26 additional double-decker trains for the state’s rolling-stock owner, the Landesanstalt Schienenfahrzeuge Baden-Württemberg (SFBW), as set out in the Alstom press release.

The package includes long-term servicing, with maintenance running through the end of 2055. Alstom values the combined order at around €500 million and says the additional units are scheduled for delivery from mid to late 2028.
Those 26 extra sets are being called under an option agreed in May 2022, when Baden-Württemberg placed a major order for 130 Coradia Max trains alongside FlexCare Perform maintenance and servicing. The wider framework—also covered by Railway Gazette—included the possibility of ordering up to 100 additional trains.
Tim Dawidowsky, President for the Central and Northern Europe region at Alstom, said the fleet expansion is intended to add capacity and comfort in regional transport. He also pointed to Alstom’s role as a long-term maintenance and servicing partner supporting reliable operations over the coming decades.
Rollout plans for Alstom Coradia Max trains Baden-Württemberg
The double-decker trains are due to be phased in from December 2026 and gradually introduced on routes across Baden-Württemberg. They will be made available to DB Regio Baden-Württemberg and Arverio in rail network 35’s Lot 1 and Lot 2 (Stuttgart-Bodensee-Netz), and are set to run on different Regionalexpress and Metropolexpress services.

Baden-Württemberg’s Transport Minister, Winfried Hermann, said the state is investing a total of around €3 billion in 156 Coradia Max trains. He cited strong passenger demand in recent years and said added capacity is needed where services are already crowded. Hermann also emphasised comfort and vehicle quality, while noting that the powerful trains are designed to remain energy-efficient despite their high top speed. He added that the new fleet should help improve local and regional services, especially after the Stuttgart 21 rail hub goes into operation.
26 additional double-decker trains: speed, capacity and onboard comfort
With a top speed of 200 km/h, the Coradia Max train for Baden-Württemberg is described as offering the fastest travel experience in German regional transport. The four-car sets combine two double-decker control cars with two single-deck intermediate cars and provide 380 seats. Each train is 106 metres long, can run in multiple traction, and comes with powerful air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, charging facilities for mobile phones and laptops, and reading lamps.
Inside, the layout is intended to suit different travel needs. Lounge areas sit alongside conference and family compartments, while spacious multi-purpose compartments provide room for large luggage, prams and bicycles. Wide single-leaf doors are designed for quick entry and exit.
Accessibility, Digital Hub Stuttgart (DKS) and long-term maintenance to 2055
The vehicles are designed to be barrier-free for travellers with mobility impairments. Step-free access is provided from the standard platform height of 760 mm above the top of the rails, and for stations with different platform heights the trains include special lifts for passengers in wheelchairs. The units will also be equipped with modern signalling and automation technology as part of the “Digital Hub Stuttgart” (DKS) lighthouse project, described as Germany’s first digitised railway hub, and they will operate in the familiar bwegt colours of white, yellow and black.
Alstom describes Coradia Max as a state-of-the-art low-floor, high-performance electric multiple unit (EMU) with a modular design that lets operators choose the best configuration and interior, as detailed on Alstom’s Coradia Max platform page. The company says more than 500 Coradia Max trains have been ordered across Europe.
On the service side, Alstom says its FlexCare Perform maintenance services can range from technical support with spares to fully outsourced maintenance solutions. It also reports that it maintains over 35,500 vehicles worldwide, servicing both Alstom and non-Alstom rail assets.
Alstom added that the Baden-Württemberg order was booked in the third quarter of its 2025/2026 financial year and is one of three contracts referenced in a Note to Investors published on 5 January 2026, which cited awards totalling approximately €2.5 billion.
