Hokuriku Heavy Industries has constructed two battery-powered shunting locomotives for the Japanese company J-TREC, according to the railway portal Railway Supply.
These locomotives serve as replacements for diesel locomotives used in transporting cargo to the Jimmudai Station in Kanagawa Prefecture, located 5 km from the Hokuriku factory.
Each of the four-axle locomotives, known as ECOMO (with the designation HEZF-55LPC), is equipped with a 355 kW permanent magnet synchronous traction motor.
Track maintenance tools: Rail drilling machine
The technical equipment, including the motor, converters, and control system, is provided by Yaskawa Electric.
Lithium-ion batteries are located in the front section of the locomotive hoods and are charged overnight.
J-TREC, a subsidiary of the railway operator JR East, is involved in the production of passenger trains, including high-speed trains.
Meanwhile, Hokuriku Heavy Industries specializes in manufacturing shunting locomotives, traction modules, and track machines.
