Laos-China railway will start operating in December

The Laos-China railway will begin operations in December as planned. This was announced by the Minister of Planning and Investments of Laos Soneksay Sifandone.
The official noted that the construction of the railway, which runs from the town of Boteni on the border of Laos with China to the capital, Vientiane, is 93.82% complete, reports railway magazine Railway Supply.
“The Laos-China railway will be built in November and open on Laos National Day, December 2,” he said. The report also notes that Chinese operators have begun delivering diesel and electric locomotives with other equipment for the first trial trip in October. The Laos-China Railway is the flagship project of the global Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

A 417 km single-track line runs from Boteny to Vientiane. As part of the route, 61 km of bridges and 75 tunnels with a total length of 198 km were built. The new line is important for landlocked Laos. As previously reported, the first rails for the construction of the China-Laos railway were laid last spring.
