World first bus-train to be launched in Japan
02.12.2021
The world first dual-mode bus, which can travel on roads and railways, will operate in the Shikoku region, the smallest of Japan four main islands.
The DMV is a diesel-powered bus equipped with an extra set of wheels on the undercarriage, which can transform into a train and move along the tracks in about 15 seconds, reports Railway Supply magazine.
It is lighter than a traditional train and therefore requires less fuel and is easier to maintain.
The bus-train is expected to enter commercial operation on 25 December. In general, it is planned to launch 3 such vehicles, each of which will accommodate 23 passengers.
The buses will follow a 50-kilometer route connecting Kayo City in Tokushima and Muroto City in Kochi Prefecture. While driving, they will have to cover 10 km along the railway track.
The Tokushima Prefecture government hopes the DMV will become an attractive tourist destination and help positively impact the local economy hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic.
Vehicles can also be helpful in natural disasters, including earthquakes, which can make sections of roads or railways unusable.
