This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Announced in Amsterdam and Chicago on 27 February, 2026, the program will equip all new wagons in the GBXLE fleet with Amsted Digital’s IQ Series™ gateways, as reported by Railway Pro. Mounted directly on the bogie in a configuration described as unique in the industry, the IQ Series gateway enables GBXLE to receive wheel slide and wheel fault reports as part of its wagon running-gear visibility.

Wheel and brake condition monitoring through a phased rollout

The partners say the initiative will roll out in stages. After the initial deployment, a second phase is set to add bearing diagnostics delivered through Amsted Digital’s over-the-air upgrade capability, eliminating the need for additional hardware retrofits or service interruptions.

William Glenn, President of GBXLE, said the collaboration reflects the company’s focus on improving wagon performance and safety while delivering benefits to customers. He added that partnering with Amsted Digital Solutions allows GBXLE to explore new possibilities in wagon condition monitoring and help shape a more intelligent and sustainable rail system.

IQ Series™ gateways and condition-based maintenance features

Built for rugged environments, the IQ Series platform is presented as supporting condition-based maintenance for freight wagons with continuous monitoring of wheelsets and wheel slide events. The companies also point to AI-driven predictive maintenance insights to reduce unplanned downtime, along with integration into existing fleet management systems via industry-standard ITSS protocols.

They further highlight plug-and-play installation with minimal installation time, a long-life battery, and hardware designed for harsh rail applications. Over-the-air upgrades are intended to unlock additional features and benefits, while a single gateway replacing multiple external sensors is described as a “green technology” approach to reduce environmental impact.

Fleet insights, portal analytics, and installation services

In day-to-day operations, the solution is described as providing proactive wheelset health insights and intelligent shock detection for immediate awareness of potential damage. The partners also cite maximized wagon availability through data-driven maintenance planning, optimized maintenance spending through targeted condition-based interventions, and strengthened operational safety with significantly lowered derailment risk.

A powerful online portal delivering real-time wheel health analytics and instant incident alerts is another component of the offer; the rollout and bogie-mounted approach are also summarized by Railmarket.

John Felty, Managing Director of Amsted Digital’s European operations, called the project a milestone in the company’s effort to transform freight rail through data-driven tools. He said Amsted Digital is proud to collaborate with GBXLE on a program reflecting shared values of safety, innovation and long-term operational efficiency.

GBXLE also said it is offering bogie-mounted installation services for customers, with bogies upfitted to include an approved Amsted Digital-compatible mounting bracket. Together, GBXLE and Amsted Digital say the initiative is intended to support broader adoption of digital maintenance technologies for a safer, smarter and more efficient European freight rail network.

Amsted Digital Solutions Inc. is a subsidiary of Amsted Rail Company, Inc., described as a global provider of undercarriage and end-of-car railcar components with over 40 locations across six continents, combining nearly 150 years of rail component design and manufacturing experience with rail telematics technology.
