The Suburban Rail Loop East TBM delivery at Burwood is now confirmed by Webuild. Additionally, this arrival accounts for half of the four-machine fleet designated for the Melbourne project. Crews have already started assembling the equipment. Tunnelling is expected to launch later this year, as noted by Railway-News. Separately, each massive unit measures approximately 103 metres long with a 7.25-metre diameter cutterhead. This first pair will travel from Burwood toward the future Glen Waverley station box.

Technical specifications and Suburban Rail Loop East TBM delivery

Once this initial pair is operational, two more units will follow. Also, these will launch from Burwood but head toward the Box Hill station box instead. In total, the machines will excavate over 10 kilometres of rock. Local primary school students from Melbourne’s east and southeast named the first two machines TBM Hacia and TBM Alice.

Project oversight by Terra Verde Joint Venture

The Suburban Rail Loop Authority appointed the Terra Verde Joint Venture to manage this specific SRL East works package. Additionally, the contract covers the excavation of two parallel tunnels. These span nearly 10 kilometres between the future Glen Waverley and Box Hill stations. Still, the scope goes beyond the main tunnels to include 39 cross passages and two station boxes. Separately, one intervention and ventilation shaft is part of the technical plan.
