The new rail bridge in Macleod will replace the Ruthven Street level crossing. This project is in Melbourne’s north east. It is outlined in designs released by Victoria’s Big Build.

The Victorian Government said the scheme is intended to ease congestion and improve safety. The level crossing removal is due by 2027. Also, the bridge is expected to improve travel reliability. Some 12,600 vehicles pass through the site each day. Meanwhile, morning boom gate delays are expected to fall by up to 30 minutes.

The project also includes a new walking and cycling path along Ellesmere Parade. It will run between Ruthven Street and Davies Street. Separately, a signalised pedestrian crossing is also part of the works. It will sit near the new bridge.

Community feedback shapes bridge designs

Community feedback shaped the design approach. As the Ruthven Street consultation report notes, people preferred natural colours and materials. In addition, they preferred architectural finishes that match the surrounding landscape. The bridge will draw on nearby Rosanna Parklands. For example, it will use earthy tones in its screening and broader colour palette.

In addition, a landscaped community space will be created beneath the bridge. Also, it will include native and indigenous plant species suited to local conditions. At the same time, those species are intended to support long-term sustainability.

Still, members of the community can review the designs through Engage Victoria. They can also submit feedback there. In addition, they can register to attend an information session.
