VR Sweden keeps Skåne rail concession for nine years
18.05.2026
The VR Sweden Skåne concession will keep VR Sweden operating regional rail services in Skåne. The services are in southern Sweden. The nine-year agreement starts on December 12 2027. The contract has an average annual turnover of SKr 1.1bn ($US 118m). This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

VR Sweden Skåne concession and service requirements
As International Railway Journal reported, this is VR Sweden’s third tender win for these services. Also, the arrangement keeps regional rail operations with VR Sweden. At the same time, Skåne Transport takes responsibility for road replacement services during disruption.
The concession award has also led to a maintenance contract. It runs for nine years and involves VR Sweden and CAF subsidiary Euromaint. The agreement covers 99 X61 EMUs. In addition, Euromaint must follow tightly defined long-term maintenance planning requirements. These requirements are intended to ensure the fleet’s technical reliability. Also, the final vehicles in the fleet were delivered in 2019.
VR Sweden must also keep enough reserve drivers and conductors available. That requirement is intended to reduce delays and cancellations caused by staff shortages.
The Skåne network carried more than 27 million passengers in 2025. Still, VR Sweden is expected to increase ridership in the future.
Euromaint maintenance contracts
The VR Sweden agreement is one of three recent Scandinavian maintenance contracts won by Euromaint. Together, they have a combined value of €300m. Separately, Swedish freight operator Green Cargo has renewed a multi-year contract with Euromaint. In addition, the contract covers maintenance and component supply. It applies to the Rc/Rd electric locomotive fleet.
Meanwhile, Norway’s infrastructure manager Bane Nor has awarded Euromaint a contract. It covers maintenance of infrastructure maintenance vehicles for a minimum of four years.
