TTC strike deadline extended during negotiations

According to CTV News, the statement was issued early Saturday. The TTC and CUPE Local 2 said talks would continue after the Friday midnight cutoff. The deadline was extended to 6 p.m. Saturday.

The extension follows weeks of contract discussions. Those talks had left the two sides at an impasse.

Earlier in the week, TTC CEO Mandeep Lali discussed the union’s latest proposal. He said it would add $40 million in costs over the term of the agreement. According to the TTC bargaining update, he said the agency could not accept those terms. He said they would place an unfair burden on taxpayers and transit users.

CUPE Local 2 cites wages and electrical workers

Meanwhile, CUPE Local 2 has said competitive wages are needed for a “safe, reliable system.” As CUPE noted, the union says the latest TTC offer does not reflect that work. The work is performed by roughly 700 electrical workers.

Separately, Ontario Premier Doug Ford addressed the negotiations during an unrelated news conference Tuesday. He said he hoped both parties would “come to their senses” to keep trains running during the World Cup.
