Victoria Regional Rail Revival program completes statewide upgrades
14.01.2026
Victoria Regional Rail Revival program has now delivered upgrade works on every regional rail line across the state, marking a major step in Victoria’s regional rail line upgrades program, as outlined on the Victorian Government’s Regional Rail Revival overview.

This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
Backed by a $4 billion investment from the Victorian and Australian governments, the program has enabled almost 400 additional and extended train services each week. That service uplift includes an extra 135 new weekly services through the Ballarat Line Upgrade. More capacity has also followed the Gippsland Line Upgrade, completed in September 2025, delivering more than 80 new weekly services, as reported by Rail Express.

Alongside the timetable improvements, the program has delivered 20 new and upgraded stations and completed hundreds of kilometres of track and signalling improvements. It has also added new and extended stabling facilities, while safety upgrades were delivered at more than 150 level crossings.

It also included the removal of two level crossings in Geelong, which the Victorian Government said were “dangerous and congested”. Upgrades were completed across the Bairnsdale, Albury and Warrnambool lines as part of the wider Regional Rail Revival package.
Signalling works on the Shepparton Line Upgrade
The Shepparton Line Upgrade wrapped up last month, with crews working 22,000 hours during a final construction blitz to complete, test and commission a new signalling system. With the new signalling in place, the line will be able to support more weekday V/Line services between Shepparton and Melbourne, as previously covered by Railway Supply.
