VIA Rail The Canadian 70th anniversary celebration in Vancouver

VIA Rail Canada marked the 70th anniversary of The Canadian at Vancouver’s Pacific Central Station, highlighting how the long-distance passenger service has linked communities across the country since 1955. Over these seven decades, the Toronto–Vancouver route has given travellers a way to cross Canada’s varied landscapes by rail and has become one of its best known long-distance services.

Looking back on this history, VIA Rail President and CEO Mario Péloquin noted that the journey allows people to slow down and experience the country in a way that few other trips can offer. He recalled memories of children seeing the mountains for the first time, families travelling across Canada to be together and strangers turning into friends over coffee in the Skyline car, stressing that the legacy of The Canadian is carried both by the rails themselves and by the people and stories they connect.

Pan-Canadian fleet renewal and long-distance services

The anniversary coincides with VIA Rail’s major renewal of its long-distance, regional and remote fleet, a direction that aligns with Railway Supply coverage of VIA Rail’s broader modernisation steps. In 2024, the federal government confirmed funding for a new Pan-Canadian fleet, enabling VIA Rail Canada to launch a competitive procurement process for new locomotives and passenger carriages. As part of this Pan-Canadian fleet renewal, the organisation expects to identify its preferred suppliers in early 2026.

Through this programme, VIA Rail plans over the coming decade to introduce updated, accessible and more sustainable rolling stock to support long-distance services such as The Canadian. These investments are meant to help secure the future of passenger rail in Canada by modernising equipment while maintaining essential connections for remote and regional communities.

Canada Strong Pass boosts interest in cross-country travel

During the anniversary year, the Canada Strong Pass programme, described on the Government of Canada’s Canada Strong Pass information page, has further increased interest in long-distance rail travel. This initiative has given more passengers the chance to experience the cross-country route, encouraging both new and returning travellers to discover The Canadian between Toronto and Vancouver as part of VIA Rail’s long-distance network.
