VIA Rail sleeper modernization scope

The work is intended to extend the life of the classic streamlined fleet. Meanwhile, VIA continues a separate procurement process for new locomotives and passenger cars. According to VIA Rail, full fleet replacement is expected over the next decade. The sleeper modernization is an interim program to keep the existing cars operating during that period.

VIA selected CAD Railway Industries in Lachine, Quebec, to carry out the five-year program. In addition, the work covers upgrades to key onboard systems and interiors. The improvements are aimed at comfort, reliability, and onboard amenities.

The sleeper cars are assigned to VIA’s main long-distance services, the Ocean and The Canadian.
