VIA Rail Canada cuts down on plastic on trains

Canadian passenger transport operator VIA Rail Canada has announced measures to reduce plastic waste on trains, Railway Supply reports, quoting zdmira.
Thus, restrictions on the use of disposable tableware and packaging in economy and business class cars will reduce the amount of waste disposed of by more than 6 tons per year. In addition, over 70% of the staff on board the trains have been trained in waste management.

VIA Rail Canada also plans to use reusable glassware instead of plastic on trains that will enter service for the first time, reducing the use of plastic bottles by more than 2 tons per year. The operator already offers reusable cutlery and dinner sets to business class passengers.
Due to the measures taken, by 2025 the operator intends to reduce waste emissions to the minimum possible volumes.
