INDIA: Indian Railways completed India’s first donor heart transport by train, using Vande Bharat Express service 20901 from Surat to Ahmedabad for a time-critical transplant at a specialist cardiac centre.

First rail transfer links Surat and Ahmedabad

The Ministry of Railways announced the mission on 31 July 2026. The live organ travelled aboard Train No. 20901 Mumbai Central–Gandhinagar Capital Vande Bharat Express and arrived safely and on time for transplantation at the U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology & Research Centre in Ahmedabad.

The train formed the intercity section of a tightly controlled medical transfer. Indian Railways, the Railway Protection Force, Gujarat State Police, doctors and transplant coordinators synchronized each stage around the donor heart’s limited viability window.

That coordination covered the handover in Surat, carriage aboard the scheduled passenger train and immediate onward movement after arrival in Ahmedabad. The operation depended on both punctual rail transport and a clear route from the station to the hospital.

Green corridor cleared the final hospital transfer

The Railway Protection Force and Gujarat State Police created a dedicated green corridor from Platform No. 1 at Ahmedabad Railway Station to the cardiac institute. The uninterrupted road link allowed the medical team to move the organ directly from the train toward the transplant procedure without delay.

Ved Prakash, Divisional Railway Manager for Ahmedabad, said every minute was crucial in such missions and credited close coordination among railway, police and medical teams for the result.

The case extends Indian Railways’ role beyond conventional passenger and freight operations through a specific logistics chain: rail carried the donor heart between cities, while the green corridor protected the final transfer. It also shows how an existing scheduled service can support a time-critical medical movement when transport authorities and healthcare teams coordinate the complete route.
