Uzbekistan and Georgia want to increase bilateral trade to $500 million in the next few years. At the same time, they will try to develop transport and logistics synergies. The main focus will be Uzbekistan’s use of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway as a gateway to Georgian Black Sea ports. The middle corridor will also be an important component of their bilateral cooperation. This was reported by Railway Supply magazine with reference to RailFreight.

The trade turnover between Uzbekistan and Georgia has doubled in the past six years, while last year alone it increased by more than 30 percent. Both sides proposed to formulate and approve a plan to strengthen their consortium and expand its presence in other markets.

The importance of the BTK line as Uzbekistan’s Transcaucasian gateway to the Black Sea was stressed. The two countries want to launch more transport projects along this rail route in the coming years, which will inevitably include rail traffic through the Middle Corridor.

Interestingly, a few months ago, in December 2022, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that Azerbaijan and Turkey hoped to increase the capacity of the BTK railway from the current one million tons per year to five million tons. He also noted that Azerbaijan is investing $100 million in railway infrastructure to achieve this goal.
