According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, the funding is intended to support rail projects. These projects would improve the passenger rail experience for American families. Also, they would make freight transport safer, more efficient, and more reliable.

USDOT rail projects and safety priorities

The U.S. Department of Transportation will support projects aimed at reducing congestion. Also, they are aimed at increasing rail passenger numbers. They would improve regional rail infrastructure. Separately, the projects will develop safety programs. Those programs include measures to prevent unauthorized access to railways. They also aim to reduce accidents, injuries, and fatalities.

The money will be distributed through a competitive funding process. Applicants have been encouraged to submit eligible projects by June 22, 2026. The funding is available under the 2025–2026 fiscal year budget.

Eligible projects include rail safety investments and infrastructure modernization. They also include congestion reduction and passenger and freight transport development. The funding may also support level crossing improvements and multimodal connections. In addition, it may support research, vocational training, and regional planning. It may also support accident prevention. It may also support innovative solutions designed to improve rail safety and efficiency.

CRISI program role in U.S. rail transport funding

The Federal Railroad Administration is carrying out the rail improvement effort through the CRISI program. The program supports projects focused on modernizing passenger and freight rail transport. Since 2017, CRISI has invested nearly $6 billion in safer rail infrastructure development.

Under Secretary Duffy’s leadership, the new funding program criteria will prioritize safety. They will also prioritize American families, workforce development, job quality, and the creation of prosperity.
