USA: OmniTRAX Rail Safety Technology now provides round-the-clock monitoring for train movements, broken rails and track temperatures on the Panhandle Northern Railroad in Texas.

OmniTRAX deployed Athena Industrial Services’ Advanced Rail Condition Detector (ARCD) and TrueTemp Link as part of its proactive infrastructure management protocol. The autonomous monitoring equipment operates continuously in dark territory, where railway lines lack signal or train-control systems.

How OmniTRAX Rail Safety Technology works

ARCD identifies train presence and broken rails, while TrueTemp Link tracks rail temperature. Together, the systems provide real-time condition data intended to support track safety across a region exposed to wide seasonal temperature swings.

PNR provides active freight service over approximately 30 miles in the Texas Panhandle. Its line between Borger and Panhandle connects with BNSF at Panhandle and serves traffic including carbon black, liquid petroleum gas, chemicals, petroleum products, scrap metal and fertilizer.

Monitoring freight infrastructure around the clock

Athena Industrial President Constantine Issakidis said the Panhandle Northern presents distinct operating challenges and that continuous rail evaluation gives OmniTRAX round-the-clock visibility. He said the system is designed to protect infrastructure, enhance rail safety and keep supply chains moving.

The installation also adds a technology layer to a short line serving Borger, which OmniTRAX identifies as home to the largest inland petrochemical complex in the United States. OmniTRAX operates 35 railroads serving ports and industrial parks nationwide.

Context

The equipment’s published operating ranges add detail to its use in the Texas Panhandle. Athena’s technical specifications rate the ARCD package for ambient temperatures from −55°C to +50°C. TrueTemp Link measures rail temperatures from −45°C to +85°C, with stated accuracy of ±0.5°C, and can interface with ARCD and other IoT devices.
