It is reported by the railway magazine Railway Supply with reference to Wabtec.

The Union Pacific Railroad, a freight railroad in the US, has ordered ten FLXdrive battery electric locomotives from Wabtec Corporation.

It will modernize Union Pacific’s rail yard infrastructure and support its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Each FLXdrive battery electric locomotive will have 7,000 battery cells.

All electric locomotives will be made in the USA. The ten battery-powered locomotives will be capable of offsetting 4,000 tons of carbon emissions per year at Union Pacific rail yards. Wabtec is scheduled to deliver the first electric locomotives to Union Pacific in late 2023.
