Union Pacific grain volume reaches Q1 record
13.05.2026
Union Pacific grain volume reached a first-quarter record in 2026. It topped the railroad’s previous Q1 high from 2008. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Record grain volume and market demand
The higher grain volumes were supported in part by demand from Mexico and overseas markets, according to Union Pacific. U.S. grain farmers also harvested a record corn crop in 2025. Production was 14% higher than in 2024.
Operational performance also improved. During Q1, UP grain shuttles averaged 334 miles per day. That compared with 294 miles per day in 2024, as Progressive Railroading reported. Also, the railroad said it has invested in new hopper cars. The cars add 2,500 pounds of carrying capacity. Because they are 3 to 7 feet shorter, more grain can move within the same train length.
Eagle Pass border crossing procedures
UP has also changed crew-interchange procedures at the Eagle Pass international border crossing. Mexican partner crews no longer interchange with U.S. crews on the international bridge. Instead, they continue 7 miles past the border into UP’s Eagle Pass yard. The railroad said the change helps speed up the crossing process.
