Union Pacific derailment in Kansas Injures Crew Member

A Union Pacific derailment in Kansas near Rossville on Friday, June 5, left one crew member with a minor injury.

Derailed locomotive and welded-rail cars

The derailment happened at about 6:55 p.m. and involved one locomotive and several railcars, Union Pacific said in a statement⁠. The railroad said one employee sustained a “minor finger injury.”

An image on the station’s website indicated that empty railcars used to transport welded rail were part of the derailment.

Route 24 closed near Rossville

A hazardous materials team was also sent to the scene after fuel leaked from the derailed locomotive⁠. The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post⁠ that U.S. Route 24 was closed at the derailment location and could stay shut for roughly 24 hours.

Rossville is located on Union Pacific’s Salina Subdivision, around 16 miles west of Topeka.
