A Union Pacific train derailment drew an emergency response Friday evening in Shawnee County, Kansas. A locomotive and several rail cars left the tracks near Rossville.

Union Pacific train derailment near Rossville

The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office said the derailment occurred on June 5. It happened southeast of Rossville, near Highway 24 and Northwest Crawford Road.

Also, law enforcement closed Highway 24 from Northwest Crawford Road to Northwest Davis Road. The closure remained in place while the response continued, as reported by AOL⁠.

A deputy at the scene told a 27 News reporter that a train engine was on its side. It was leaking fuel. Meanwhile, a hazmat team was responding. One member of the train crew was reportedly injured.

Highway 24 closure and investigation

Union Pacific was contacted for additional information. Daryl Bjoraas, a representative for the company, said:

“At approximately 6:55 p.m. CDT Friday, a Union Pacific train derailed near Rossville, Kansas,” said Daryl Bjoraas with Union Pacific. “One locomotive and several rail cars derailed. The train crew was transported for medical evaluation, and one employee sustained a minor finger injury. Union Pacific personnel are on site and working with local authorities. The incident is under investigation.”
