These tram-trains are capable of operating both on tram routes and traditional rail lines. They are equipped with battery-powered traction for use on non-electrified sections.

Infrastructure Modernization for the Tram-Train

The trials became possible due to a major infrastructure modernization program. The program, valued at 1 billion pounds, includes electrification of 170 kilometers of rail tracks connecting Cardiff with neighboring cities.

New Opportunities for the Transport System

Additionally, a new depot for servicing tram-trains has been built in the Taffs Well area. This depot will house 36 CITYLINK trains and the SWM system’s control center.

Regular tram-train operations will begin in December 2025, significantly improving transport accessibility in the region.
