Siemens Mobility signs framework agreements with CARGOUNIT for the supply of up to 100 Vectron platform locomotives, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The largest multi-system locomotive agreements in Poland!

Siemens Mobility and CARGOUNIT, the largest independent locomotive leasing company in Poland, have signed a framework contract for the purchase of 90 Vectron MS locomotives.

Implementation of the European Train Control System (ETCS)

In addition, CARGOUNIT has ordered 10 Smartron locomotives. The first locomotive deliveries are planned for 2025.

The most advanced multi-system locomotives Vectron and Smartron are key to performing a wide range of freight tasks across Europe, as well as to strong growth in the intermodal segment.

Vectron locomotives are modern, versatile locomotives in the European market, with a modular design that allows easy adaptation to operational requirements and the specificities of movement in different countries.

The main idea behind their development was efficiency and cost-effectiveness in performing traction tasks in both domestic and international passenger and freight transport in Europe.

The history of cooperation – from 1 to 100

The cooperation between Siemens Mobility and CARGOUNIT began in 2018 with the purchase of the Vectron MS locomotive, which was presented in the same year at the test track of the Railway Institute in Zmigrod.

Then the company acquired five more locomotives in 2019 with the financial support of the EU Transport Project Center, and two years later, at the TRAKO 2021 exhibition, signed a contract for the supply, together with technical maintenance, of another 30 units of Vectrons to provide services in the Central region and Western Europe.

Meanwhile, from 2021 to 2023, CARGOUNIT is also expanding its presence in southern markets – in Romania, offering special Smartron locomotives produced by Siemens Mobility, and expanding the Vectron client portfolio to include Bahnoperator, DB Cargo Polska, Lotos Kolej, Freightliner PL, Ost-West Logistics in the Polish market, CD Cargo and LokoTrain in the Czech market, and at the end of December last year also Helrom in the German market.

CARGOUNIT’s Vectron locomotives are used for both freight and passenger transport, including the BWE (Warsaw-Berlin Express) trains jointly operated by PKP Intercity and DB Fernverkehr.

A new development story in 2025

At the end of February 2024, the companies signed another framework agreement on cooperation development in Wroclaw for the period from 2025.

The order includes the purchase of 30 Vectron locomotives and 10 Smartron locomotives with an additional option to purchase up to 60 Siemens Mobility locomotives.
