08.06.2023
The CAF hydrogen train is being tested on the railway network in Spain, according to the railway journal Railway Supply citing Rollingstock.
Permission was granted by the infrastructure operator Adif after successful dynamic testing at the manufacturer’s test track in Zaragoza and on the Zaragoza-Canfranc line, which passes through the Pyrenees Mountains.
During the test, the train operated on a part of the route using the overhead contact line and on another part using the hydrogen-battery engine.
In the future, the train is planned to be tested in various climatic and operational conditions, including the regions of Aragon, Madrid, and Galicia. The testing is scheduled to be completed by 2024.
The project, costing €14 million, is being implemented by the FCH2Rail consortium, which includes CAF, the national railway operator Renfe, Adif, and other companies.
As part of this project, a hybrid engine with hydrogen fuel cells from Toyota was installed on the three-car CAF Civia 463 electric train.
