The Competition for major freight rail planning in Western Australia is an important milestone in the implementation of the Westport Program and in the design of the future Kwinana container terminal.

Tender Opens for Freight Rail Planning in Western Australia

Tender Marks New Stage in WA’s Freight Rail Transformation

State government tendering invites an integrated project team to finish the definition stage, such as the technical design, environmental work, and community consultation. Works in the plan involve new links to Kwinana by rail, duplication of the freights from Kwinana to Cockburn, and the North Lake Road level crossing replacing with a new bridge.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti explained the project will “secure Western Australia’s container trade future and make our supply chain safer and more efficient.” She furthered that the easiest and peak-performing method to transport containers was “the safest and most efficient way to transport containers,” and the upgrade will see the mode share in the container-on-rail mode “considerably increase once the new port terminal opens.”

Since the Albanese and Cook Labor Governments share funding for the program, the alliance will speed up the process and provide good coordination among federal and state priorities.

Tender Supports Westport Program and Local Communities

Minister Saffioti confirmed that the Tender also provides direct advantages for nearby inhabitants. “This work will be a game changer for local communities by eliminating bottle.necks such as the North Lake Road level crossing, making the area less congested and safer,” she explained.

The Westport Program is and always will be a keystone in the footings of Western Australia’s long-term logistic plan. The future Kwinana port will manage increasing trade volumes, facilitate industrial growth, and minimize business costs. “Westport will futureproof WA’s trade capabilities for the next century,” the Minister explained, “ensuring costs for imports, exports, and everyday goods remain low.”

The Request for Proposals will open up with an award date in the first half of the year 2026.
