Formula 1 technology will power Network Rail’s transition to 5G
17.11.2022
MCLAREN Applied has announced that it has been awarded a contract to supply UK infrastructure manager Network Rail (NR) with a 5G edge connection originally developed for Formula One (F1) motor racing. It is reported by Railway Supply magazine with reference to IRJ.
This technology will be used by NR to provide on-board communications for its infrastructure monitoring trains, helping to transfer data across all sorts of environments to improve the performance of the UK rail network. The system will provide a high level of connectivity to ensure high-speed and reliable transmission of critical data across a variety of conditions across the UK’s 32,186 km rail network.
McLaren says the technology will give mobile teams the ability to quickly and reliably stream real-time data streams, including camera images and sensor readings for tracking, foliage along the line and network monitoring, to enable NR to confidently and quickly make informed design and engineering decisions. service.
McLaren Applied’s patented Fleet Connect software works by splitting data across networks in real time and then reassembling it in the cloud while it is enroute to its destination. This helps to reduce blackspots and provide a consistent connectivity stream for anyone travelling in a moving vehicle in any kind of environment, the company says.
Queue of wagons at the border has been reduced to less than 15,000.
McLaren Applied COO Samir Maha said the contract was “perfect illustration of how our work at the cutting-edge of motorsport can directly translate into game-changing solutions for transport.”
“Gathering accurate data, in a timely manner across the whole network, is extremely important for the safe and smooth operation of the railway,” says director asset information, Network Rail, Mr Jason Saxon. “Having a system that enables us to transmit critical asset condition data from our infrastructure monitoring fleet will enable us to continue to put passengers and freight first with a safe and reliable railway that they can rely on.”
