Another five legacy locomotives remain to be finished. As Rail Express reported, locomotive 2006 is next in the schedule. It is due to leave the workshop later this year.

In total, the project covers eight older 2050 and 2000 class legacy locomotives in Launceston. Railway Supply has also covered the program’s focus on performance, reliability and safety.

The overhauls include new engines to improve performance and dependability. They also cover major component renewal. That includes traction motors, generators, braking and control systems, and locomotive wiring.

Drivers’ cabins are being upgraded as well. TasRail is carrying out that work with its operational team. The aim is to improve efficiency and comfort.

TasRail highlights local involvement

TasRail described the project as a “genuinely Tasmanian effort”. It involves skilled workshop trades and a broad network of local suppliers. In addition, the work supports needs ranging from small components to more complex fabrication.

“Along the way, we’ve also been able to grow our workforce and build capability – with our teams gaining valuable experience in completely stripping, rebuilding and re-qualifying locomotive components for the future,” they said.

“And, in a time where cost of living pressures are front of mind, there’s something powerful about extending the life of existing assets.

“Rebuilding locomotives is not just practical – it’s sustainable, helping us get more out of what we already have while keeping freight moving efficiently across the state, with the added benefit of buying our business time to properly assess other technologies.”
