Bridge repairs halt Kuranda Scenic Railway through 20 September

Australia: Kuranda Scenic Railway services are cancelled through 20 September after Queensland Rail closed the Kuranda Range line to trains so a bridge defect can be repaired immediately.

In its closure notice, Queensland Rail said the problem was found during routine work on Wednesday, 9 September, and was likely caused by the combined effect of a run of significant wet seasons in Far North Queensland over recent years.

Specialists sent north to speed up the work

Engineers, maintenance teams and other specialist staff have been drafted in from across Queensland, and many of them were still on their way north when the closure was announced. The extra personnel are meant to accelerate both the bridge repairs and the additional works, allowing trains to return as soon as possible.

Scott Cornish, Queensland Rail’s Head of Regional, recognised the disruption for travellers but stressed that the operator would not compromise on safety:

“Safety is Queensland Rail’s number one priority, so the Kuranda Range line will remain closed until the repairs are completed and the bridge is safe for operations.”

Cornish also said that, because of the intensive wet seasons of recent years, Queensland Rail had proactively stepped up inspections to reinforce safety and the management of assets on its network.

Free coach for passengers with bookings

Holders of a valid pre-booked ticket can use a free road coach that Queensland Rail has arranged as a loop service, so they can still reach Kuranda and its tourist attractions. Cornish said free travel on the coach would be offered to visitors who had made their bookings independently, while the operator noted that details of the service will be provided to eligible customers.

What is known about services

Outside closures, Kuranda Scenic Railway departs twice a day in each direction all year, except on Christmas Day. On its departure times page, the operator notes that the timetable is subject to change and can be affected by weather and scheduled maintenance.

Planned closures on the Kuranda Range line

Separately from the current bridge repairs, Kuranda Scenic Railway lists five planned maintenance closures between November 2026 and November 2027. Each runs from Monday to Friday, and all services are cancelled on those dates.
