Sydney Metro stations awards brought recognition at the 2026 World Architecture News (WAN) Awards. Earlier this month, Waterloo Station and Gadigal Station each received Gold in the Transport category.

Waterloo Station wins Gold in the Transport category

Waterloo Station was designed by transport and precinct specialists John McAslan + Partners. There, judges commended it for spatial expertise. Also, the project was described as “a high-quality project with a strong integration of art, while remaining very clear in terms of navigation and restrained in its design.”

In addition, judges praised the station’s response to two demands at once. It moves large volumes of passengers efficiently. At the same time, it gives the inner-city community of Waterloo a “dignified, legible public place”.

Meanwhile, Troy Uleman led the project. He is Sydney studio director at John McAslan + Partners. Also, he said the design is grounded in the site’s rich Indigenous heritage. It also reflects industrial history and contemporary density. “At Waterloo, our intent was to create an uplifting user experience with a strong connection to place,” he said. “The WAN Award is a testament to our success, thanks to a collaborative and talented team.”

Still, Waterloo Station had already received a 2025 Good Design Award. It came in the Built Environment Architectural Design category.

Gadigal Station adds to Sydney station design recognition

Separately, Gadigal Station was designed by Foster + Partners. Cox Architecture collaborated on the project. It stands between Sydney’s southern Central Business District and the Midtown retail precinct. In addition, Prix Versailles had previously named it one of the World’s Most Beautiful Passenger Stations for 2025.
