Steilacoom to Deploy Rail-Crossing Patrol Drone on BNSF Lines
01.04.2026
A new rail-crossing patrol drone will soon monitor BNSF Railway tracks following a $14,525 grant approval from the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission. This investment comes from the state’s Grade Crossing Protective Fund. Also, it enables the town of Steilacoom to purchase the hardware and provide technical training for five local officers.

Funding for Advanced Rail Surveillance
The initiative aims to curb a history of accidents on a specific stretch of track. Records show that 10 people have died and 152 near-misses occurred there over the last 20 years. Meanwhile, BNSF and Union Pacific Railway maintain daily operations through the corridor. Still, certain sections remain difficult for personnel to reach on foot. By utilizing aerial surveillance, police can identify track hazards faster than traditional ground patrols.

Improving Response Times and Safety
UTC officials noted that the technology is intended to reach areas that are hard to access. In addition, it should minimize the ripple effect of rail delays. Local authorities expect to have the rail-crossing patrol drone operational within six months of receiving the grant. At the same time, the required safety training will be finalized.
As reported by Progressive Railroading, the 2.45-mile patrol area covers a segment of the regional rail network where accessibility has previously limited security efforts.
