San Diego MTS awarded $48.3M for Orange Line rail upgrades
31.03.2026
Orange Line rail upgrades in San Diego are set to advance after the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) secured a $48.3 million state grant. The funding comes through the California State Transportation Agency’s TIRCP. These funds support 18 miles of track. Also, this critical corridor connects Lemon Grove’s Massachusetts Station with the El Cajon Transit Center.

Infrastructure and Orange Line rail upgrades
Construction is slated to begin in July. Work during this phase includes installing new universal interlocking crossovers. Crews will also replace aging signal interfaces. Separately, these technical updates maintain a state of good repair. This ensures the trolley network remains reliable for regional commuters.
Focus on safety and regional mobility
Grade crossing safety enhancements are also part of the project’s scope. These efforts follow the first phase of improvements funded by a 2022 TIRCP grant. In addition, the state program focuses on reducing transit emissions and expanding mobility in disadvantaged neighborhoods. By strengthening the infrastructure, MTS aims to support regional transport for the long term.
