Hydrogen Trains with New Technology in Sicily Network

Stadler and Circumetnea Ferrovia (FCE) signed a binding agreement for the design and build of two hydrogen-fired narrow-gauge trains. The contract, signed in EXPO Ferroviaria in Milano, also involves an option for 13 further units as well as five years of maintenance.

Trains will run along the Paternò–Randazzo section, through the Etna Nature Park around Mount Etna. This initiative brings blue hydrogen technology for the first time to Sicily’s rail network, providing quieter service and lower emissions for commuters and visitors alike.

It will have a central “Power Pack” with hydrogen tanks and fuel cells that produce electricity but no carbon dioxide emissions. Two-car formation, it can take up to 87 seated people and 147 in all, with room for bicycles, wheelchairs, and pushchairs.

Hydrogen Trains Powered by Hydrogen Reinforce Stadler’s

Using this agreement, Stadler is increasing its hydrogen fleet in Italy, after previous agreements in Sardinia and in Calabria funded by the National Recovery and Resiliveness Plan. Altogether, these agreements bring stadler’s hydrogen fleet in italy to 19 units.

Maurizio Oberti, Sales and Marketing Director for Italy of Stadler, announced the deal as evidence of the company’s commitment to sustainable development and the decarbonization of the Italian railway system. He pointed out that the Sicilian order enters a new regional market and strengthens the manufacturer’s innovatory leadership.

The trains will be manufactured at Switzerland-based Stadler’s plant in Bussnang. Due to their low weight design and axle load of below 11 tonnes, they would be suitable for FCE’s narrow lines and steep gradients.

It solidifies the leadership of Stadler as a world leader in hydrogen-fired transport and underscores its continuing commitment to marrying cutting-edge engineering with environmentally friendly technology.

News on railway transport, industry, and railway technologies from Railway Supply that you might have missed:

How important is the contract for hydrogen-powered trains in Sicily?

It is the first time that hydrogen technology is being utilized in Sicily’s railway system, furthering the Italian country’s initiatives to lower emissions and upgrade local transport.

How much hydrogen power will the deal make Stadler produce?

Stadler is going to supply two trains to Ferrovia Circumetnea at the beginning, with a possibility of 13 more units in the present agreement.

Why do hydrogen trains contribute to sustainability?

They create power from fuel cells with the help of hydrogen, releasing no more than water vapour and not greenhouse emissions, thus becoming a clean diesel train substitute.
