Once approved, the locomotives are intended for train rescue duties. They are also intended for passenger push-pull operations across the Italian railway network.
Separately, the framework agreement was signed in February 2023. It covers maintenance for ten years, with options for two additional five-year extensions.
Bi-mode locomotive design and safety systems
The EUROLIGHT DUAL is a four-axle (Bo’Bo’) bi-mode locomotive. It combines 3 kV DC electric traction with a 1,800 kW diesel engine.
Output at the wheel rim is rated at 3,000 kW. Starting tractive effort is 330 kN. Maximum speed is 160 km/h.
The design is based on Stadler’s EUROLIGHT platform. Also, the design uses a lightweight monocoque structure and AC/AC transmission. In addition, the locomotives are equipped with ETCS B3R2, SCMT and SSC safety systems. Their 20-tonne axle load allows operation on both main and secondary lines.
