Stadler EURO6000 Approved for Freight Use in Belgium
14.07.2026
The Stadler EURO6000 authorization in Belgium extends the locomotive’s authorised operating range following clearance in Luxembourg at the end of 2025. With both approvals in place, the locomotive can support uninterrupted freight services between Barcelona and Antwerp along the North Sea–Mediterranean Corridor.

The Belgian authorisation broadens the EURO6000 platform’s role in international freight operations across Western Europe. Locomotives of this type can now run through Spain, France, Luxembourg and Belgium, linking the Iberian Peninsula with ports in northern Europe.
Stadler says the EURO6000 is currently the only locomotive type operating along the full North Sea–Mediterranean Corridor, one of the strategic routes within the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).
Direct freight services between Barcelona and Antwerp
The wider operating area allows freight operators to run direct services between Barcelona and Antwerp without changing locomotives at national borders. Antwerp is one of Europe’s most important ports.
Iñigo Parra, executive vice president of Stadler’s Spanish division, said:
“The authorization in Belgium and Luxembourg opens up new opportunities for rail freight operators seeking sustainable and competitive cross-border solutions,”
He added that the EURO6000 was designed for international operations and can support continuous freight flows between southern and northern Europe.
Operating one multisystem locomotive across several countries can reduce the need for changes at national borders, which otherwise require additional time, personnel and coordination between operators. For freight carriers, this can simplify international train planning and increase commercial speed.

EURO6000 fleet and technical capabilities
More than 100 EURO6000 locomotives are now in service, with the fleet already used on international freight trains between France and Spain.
The six-axle locomotive has a power output of 6 MW and a traction force designed for heavy freight trains. According to Stadler, a single EURO6000 can haul trains weighing more than 2,000 metric tons on routes with challenging gradients while maintaining competitive commercial speeds.
Its multisystem capability enables operation under the different electrification systems used across European rail networks. This is one of the essential requirements for international services crossing countries with different technical infrastructure.
The EURO6000 platform is designed for freight corridors where heavy trains must travel through several countries and across rail networks with varying technical characteristics.

North Sea–Mediterranean Corridor
The North Sea–Mediterranean Corridor connects ports and industrial centres in northern Europe with France and the Iberian Peninsula. The route through Spain, France, Luxembourg and Belgium carries containers, industrial products and other freight between Mediterranean and North Sea ports.
Approval in Belgium and Luxembourg completes one of the necessary links for operating the same EURO6000 locomotive along the entire route.
