ETCS Pushes Škoda Group’s Digital Railway Innovation

At the TRAKO trade fair in Gdańsk, Škoda’s affiliate, The Signalling Company (TSC), introduced its certified ETCS solution — a major breakthrough in train safety. Built on the iEVC-RailOS platform, it combines modular hardware with software-defined signalling, enabling seamless integration across fleets.

Managing Director Alexandre Bétis called certification “the Everest of the safety world” and credited the team’s expertise and industry support. Because this milestone reflects years of testing and compliance with strict EU safety standards, it reinforces the credibility of Škoda Group and its partners.

Zdeněk Sváta, Board Member of Škoda Group, pointed out that the system will first appear in the following generation of single-deck electric trains. Such embedding will make it easier to install the system, reduce operating expenses, and make the operator more reliable.

ETCS Platform Delivers Scalable, Cost-Efficient Safety

The ETCS platform offers key advantages such as compact installation, minimal vehicle modification, and future scalability. It hosts both ETCS and national signalling systems on a single, unified platform.

Since 2019, TSC engineers have been developing what they describe as the world’s first fully software-defined signalling architecture. Because it is energy-efficient and modular, it can serve both new and retrofitted rolling stock, creating a cost-effective pathway for modernization.

Lineas, Belgium’s biggest private freight operator, helped in its early growth. With the words of Head of Rail Fleet Management, Bruno Vanlede, their interest was motivated by one goal in common: to make sustainable and more affordable train safety a reality.

With this certification, Škoda Group demonstrates not just technical expertise but also a clear vision for safer and smarter railways. Its commitment to innovation and collaboration strengthens Europe’s shift toward modern, low-carbon transport networks.

News on railway transport, industry, and railway technologies from Railway Supply that you might have missed:

What is ETCS in railway systems?

ETCS (European Train Control System) is a digital signalling technology that improves train safety, reduces human error, and standardizes operations across European rail networks.

How does ETCS benefit Škoda Group’s customers?

ETCS enables smoother integration, lowers maintenance costs, and supports upgrades, so operators can modernize fleets without major hardware overhauls.

Can ETCS be installed on existing trains?

Yes. The modular design allows cost-efficient retrofitting on older rolling stock, helping operators enhance safety without replacing entire systems.
