Siemens to Deploy ETCS Level 2 on BLS Regional Network
26.06.2025
Siemens has signed a $118 million contract with infrastructure operator BLS Netz to implement ETCS Level 2 and digital signaling systems across the Swiss regional railway network. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The project will begin with the Bern–Fischermätteli–Schwarzenburg line, where outdated ETCS Level 1 will be replaced by a more advanced radio-based Level 2 platform. This route features a high number of level crossings and densely populated areas.

Siemens to Upgrade Crossings and Modernize Centralization
Siemens will introduce intelligent level crossing control, significantly reducing closure times when trains pass. This will improve safety and reduce the impact on road traffic.
The signaling upgrade will reduce the number of interlockings, simplify maintenance, and facilitate future system expansion. These improvements will also enhance network capacity in the long term.
Siemens Agreement Covers a 10-Year Outlook
The framework agreement includes options to expand the project to other parts of the BLS network over the next decade. This approach enables phased ETCS Level 2 implementation without additional tendering.
The BLS network spans 424 km of tracks, including the 34.6 km Lötschberg Base Tunnel, opened in 2007. This vital corridor links the North and Mediterranean Seas as part of the trans-European freight and passenger transport axis.
