Agreement on trains for Berlin and its size

The Siemens Mobility, Stadler, and Deutsche Bahn consortium was successful in winning the bid for operating two-thirds of the German capital city’s S-Bahn network. Therefore, the project is important in a strategic sense.

The two firms, Siemens Mobility and Stadler, will produce at least 1,400 vehicles and provide 30 years’ technical maintenance. Meanwhile, German railway operator Deutsche Bahn will run the lines for 15 years.

Financing and future prospects

The federal government in early July approved €15 billion in project financing. The first trains, nevertheless, are only set to be rolled out during the 2030s due to the lengthy preparation time.

The second bidder was Alstom, which has the right to appeal up to September 11. So, the final choice in regard to the contractual offer shall depend on how legal procedures come out.

When are Berlin’s new trains going to be in operation?

The first trains are set to enter service in the early 2030s, as production and certification will require a few years.

Who will be maintaining the bought trains?

Siemens Mobility and Stadler are in charge of 30 years’ technical maintenance, ensuring smooth running and cost savings.

The train supply tender was delayed why?

The procedures were initiated in 2020 but were time and again put on hold following lawsuits by Alstom and court hearings thereafter.
