Siemens Mobility paces Switzerland’s network transformation

Siemens Mobility will replace about 80% of SBB’s current interlocking systems in a period of 20 years. The initiative encompasses software, hardware, and lifecycle service concepts to provide a comprehensive digital control architecture.

The agreement will have an initial tenure of ten years but will extend up to 25 years. Since it involves maintenance, training, and support activities, it will ensure long-term continuity for SBB.

With Signaling X, Siemens is transferring interlocking logic from physical components and hardware supporting railway operations to a secure central data center. This will enhance diagnostics, improve upgradability, and boost overall railway network robustness.

According to Michael Peter, CEO for Siemens Mobility, this collaboration proves that innovation is playing a critical role in decarbonization. Digital interlockings increase capacity, enhance service quality, and meet SBB’s climate goals, Michael Peter pointed out.

Siemens Mobility Enhances Innovation and Sustainability

Digital interlockings increase network capacity for SBB by enabling more trains to operate on a given infrastructure with improved processing speed and accuracy. Digital interlockings consume lower amounts of energy compared to traditional interlockings.

The company embarked on constructing a battery system plant worth $41 million in September in Luhe-Wildenau, Bavaria. The company has invested $26 million in this business. This will meet the increasing demands for sustainable traction power.

The SBB network in Switzerland is 3,266 kilometres long and is a national hub for freight and passenger transport. With this collaboration, Siemens Mobility and SBB confirm Europe’s position in digitalized railway technology.
