ScotRail timetable improvements will take effect on Sunday, May 17. The changes include additional services designed to support rising demand for leisure travel. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

ScotRail will permanently remove peak fares from September 1, allowing passengers to pay the same fare at any time of day and making rail travel more affordable across Scotland.

More weekend trains will run on several routes, according to ScotRail. For example, these include Glasgow Queen Street to Anniesland via Maryhill. The routes also include Glasgow Central to Kilmarnock and Ayr to Glasgow Central.

In addition, extra services will be added from the Levenmouth Rail Link. They will run between Edinburgh Waverley and North Berwick. The Edinburgh Waverley to Aberdeen route is also included.

For example, on Sundays, more electric trains will operate on the East Kilbride line. Meanwhile, ScotRail will enhance local Sunday services between Aberdeen and Montrose. It will also enhance Sunday local services between Aberdeen and Inverurie.

Also, additional carriages will be provided on Edinburgh Waverley – Helensburgh Central services. The extra carriages apply on Friday and Saturday evenings.

ScotRail says the timetable changes will give customers greater flexibility. It says they will also offer more travel options across Scotland. Those options cover leisure trips, events, and days out.

Customers advised to check train times

Mark Ilderton, ScotRail service delivery director, said: “From tomorrow, we are introducing timetable improvements to support the growing demand for leisure travel and provide customers with more flexibility when travelling across the country.

The changes include additional weekend and late evening services on a number of routes, helping customers travel for events, social occasions, and days out by rail.

“Alongside the fares freeze, these timetable enhancements offer customers even greater value and convenience when choosing to travel with ScotRail.

“We encourage customers to check their journeys before travelling, as some train times may have changed.”

Separately, a small number of weekday services will also change. As STV News reported, this is to support operational requirements and planned engineering works. Those works include electrification work on the Borders Railway route.
