Why the TEN-T section in Basel is being rebuilt?

The project is intended to enable the movement of road transport units up to 4 m high along the North Sea–Mediterranean TEN-T corridor branch on the Metz–Strasbourg–Basel route. The broader context for these “4-metre corridors” in freight transport is outlined by FOT (BAV) on admin.ch.

What works are planned on the SBB section?

The plan includes lowering the track in two rail tunnels and beneath two road bridges, along with related measures on the sections in between. It also предусматривает the refurbishment of two single-track railway bridges, each 60 m long, over the River Birsig. The project budget is CHF 121 million.

Timeline and status on the Metz–Strasbourg–Basel route

SBB expects to begin the main volume of infrastructure works in April 2026, once preparatory stages are complete. Completion of the Basel section is scheduled for 2029; similar works on the French side are already under way, as noted by RailFreight.com.
