What the Portal North Bridge cutover involves?

Beginning February 2026, Amtrak began to “cutover,” transferring one track of rail service from the existing bridge to the new bridge, as outlined by Amtrak. The work is aimed at long-term Northeast Corridor reliability and capacity improvements on the NEC, supporting an improved travel experience.

Amtrak described the effort as the first major bridge cutover project ever on the Northeast Corridor. Meanwhile, crews are working around the clock to connect Portal North Bridge to the existing railroad. In addition, the scope includes installing new track, finalizing the new catenary, and testing the signal system.

Portal Bridge replacement and corridor-wide infrastructure work

The Portal Bridge replacement is one of several major infrastructure projects currently ongoing throughout the NEC, supported by generational investments from state and federal partners. Also, the broader push is positioned as part of ongoing work to improve service on the corridor.

Agencies and partners on Portal North Bridge

Amtrak pointed to partnership across multiple organizations, including NJ TRANSIT and Amtrak, as well as USDOT, the Federal Railroad Administration, and the Federal Transit Administration. Separately, additional project background is also provided by NJ TRANSIT, and Railway Supply has previously covered related Portal North Bridge developments in Railway Supply. The update also directed readers to a photo gallery showing crews completing cutover work.
