Amtrak VRE Service Suspension Changes DC-Virginia Trips

The Amtrak VRE service suspension will affect passenger rail operations between Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia during a planned nine-day interruption that will suspend or limit train movements across the Potomac River.

The work is part of the Transforming Rail in Virginia program and accompanies broader rail infrastructure upgrades to tracks, bridges and signaling systems intended to address major bottlenecks on the East Coast rail corridor.

Crews will work continuously during the shutdown, installing new interlockings, upgrading signals, replacing switches and carrying out critical structural maintenance near L’Enfant Plaza and the Long Bridge approaches. These tasks cannot be performed safely while passenger trains are operating through the affected area.

Amtrak VRE service suspension changes passenger operations

Amtrak passengers traveling to, from or through the Washington area will face shortened routes and other service changes during the nine-day service suspension.

Northeast Regional trains serving Virginia destinations, including Richmond, Norfolk, Newport News and Roanoke, will not cross the Potomac into Washington, D.C. Instead, services will begin or end south of the river, mainly at Alexandria or Richmond Staples Mill Road station.

Long-distance trains connecting through the District with destinations farther south, including the Silver Star, Silver Meteor and Palmetto, will operate on revised schedules or use designated motorcoach connections between Washington Union Station and points in Virginia.

Amtrak service north of Washington on the Northeast Corridor will continue on its normal schedule. The Auto Train terminal in Lorton, Virginia, will also operate normally.

VRE trains will terminate south of Washington

Virginia Railway Express will shorten its commuter rail operations while the work is underway.

Trains on the Manassas and Fredericksburg lines will not continue into the District of Columbia. Inbound VRE services will instead terminate at Alexandria and Crystal City.

Passengers with valid VRE tickets or passes will be able to continue their journeys by Metrorail from connecting stations without paying an additional Metro fare. Transfer points include King St-Old Town, served by the Blue and Yellow lines, and Crystal City.

Transit agencies are also preparing supplemental express bus connections during the morning and evening peak periods to help manage expected crowding at transfer points.

Travel conditions during the nine-day rail work

Regional transit authorities are advising drivers to expect heavier traffic on major roads as commuters turn to alternative driving and rideshare options. Interstate 395, Interstate 95 and the George Washington Memorial Parkway are among the corridors where increased congestion is expected.

Officials said carrying out the work during one continuous nine-day closure will avoid months of intermittent weekend shutdowns. The concentrated work period is also intended to accelerate the longer-term expansion of regional passenger rail capacity.

What is known about service

Amtrak says the outage will begin after the close of service on October 16 and end before trains resume on the morning of October 26, 2026. The work centers on A-Interlocking inside the First Street Tunnel, which routes Amtrak and VRE trains between Washington Union Station and Virginia. Existing switches and crossovers there are beyond their service life and currently require a 10 mph speed restriction. During the closure, Amtrak plans three round-trip bus connections between Alexandria and Washington timed to meet trains, along with additional express bus services on several Virginia routes.

Travelers are being advised to check current service information and review alternate schedules through Amtrak, VRE and WMATA before their travel dates.
