Railway Modernisation Increases Freight and Passenger Intensity

A 1.5 km connection to Gdynia’s central station on line no. 202 will enhance transport mobility. It is funded by PLK’s own funds, the state budget of Poland, and by the European Investment Bank. Construction will start in 2026 and complete by 2032.

PLK is going to build/restore 40 bridges, viaducts, and culverts. A new traffic management system will enhance safety of work, and new tracks and junctions will allow for autonomous running of lines 201 and 202.

It supports the traditional “Węglówka” route’s position of critical importance to Poland’s south–north freight flows. It also places Gdynia as a more resilient logistics hub, shifting cargo faster and lessening port congestion.

Upgraded infrastructure reduces passenger travel times and emission reduction. It also advocates for employment creation during construction, logistics, and rail operations jobs. Such upgrades are aligned with Poland’s long-term sustainability development goals.

PLK, since 2021, has refurbished the longer Bydgoszcz–Tricity line under seven contracts, which have involved more than $587 million of investments. Trains, when completed sections allow, will reach speeds of 160 km/h for passenger service and 120 km/h for freight service.
