California’s transportation agency, CalSTA, has awarded an $80 million grant for the purchase of a two-story contact-battery train, Stadler KISS, for the passenger carrier Caltrain, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply.

This purchase complements the framework contract from 2016 for the supply of KISS trains.

Tender Announced for the Supply of Electric Locomotives

It is planned that the experimental operation of the four-car trainset will commence in the fall of 2024.

Previously, Stadler had not produced a battery version of the KISS train.
