ÖBB has introduced the first Stadler Servicejet firefighting and rescue train
14.09.2023
The national infrastructure operator, ÖBB-Infrastruktur, has unveiled the primary carriage of the inaugural train, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply.
Functional tests are set to commence this year, with certification procedures scheduled for 2024.
The three-carriage train is designed for bidirectional movement without the need for reconfiguration and can reach speeds of up to 160 km/h. This significantly reduces response times in emergencies compared to the existing ÖBB firefighting and rescue trains.

Furthermore, it reduces the total number of trains from 22 to 18. The electrical system boasts a power output of 3000 kW.
The train can also operate autonomously thanks to two diesel generators with a combined power output of 780 kW and a 280 kWh battery.
Servicejet is capable of evacuating up to 324 individuals and towing trains weighing up to 2000 tons, including electric trains. A 40 m³ water tank is installed in the intermediate carriage.
The main carriages feature four high-pressure fire extinguishers with a 100 bar pressure rating and two low-pressure extinguishers at 10 bar, along with foam generators, hydrants, and other firefighting equipment controlled from the cab.

Four rooftop fans with filtration systems are installed for tunnel operations, purifying air and preventing smoke infiltration.
The manufacturer has also equipped the train with thermal imagers for detecting people in conditions of heavy smoke.
ÖBB-Infrastruktur initially ordered 5 such firefighting and rescue trains from Stadler in December 2020 and later expanded the contract to include 18 trains.
The total cost amounts to 230 million euros.
These trains will be utilized not only in emergency situations but also for maintenance and inspections within the Austrian railway network.
